Hard water is a fact of life along the Wasatch Front. Over time, it builds up inside your tank and lowers efficiency. Learning how to flush your water heater on the Wasatch Front once or twice a year can help it run better, last longer, and save money.

As “Provo’s Handyman” ★ Reliable ★ Skilled ★ Proven, here’s exactly how I recommend doing it safely.

🔧 Step 1: Turn Off Power and Water

  • Gas heaters: set the control knob to Pilot.
  • Electric heaters: turn off the breaker.
  • Close the cold-water valve on top of the tank.
    Safety first — no exceptions.

🪣 Step 2: Attach a Hose and Drain

Connect a garden hose to the drain valve near the bottom of the tank.
Run the hose to a floor drain or outside.
Open the valve slowly and let the water flow until it runs clear instead of cloudy.
(You’ll see the mineral sediment wash out.)

💨 Step 3: Rinse and Refill Your Water Heater

Close the drain valve, remove the hose, and reopen the cold-water supply for a few minutes to stir any remaining sediment.
Then refill the tank completely and turn the power or gas back on.

⚙️ Step 4: Check Your Work

Once the tank is full, open a hot-water faucet inside the house.
When it runs smooth with no air sputter, you’re good to go.
You’ll notice hotter, quieter water almost immediately.

🧰 Pro Tip for Wasatch Front Homeowners

Our local water is extra hard. Adding a whole-house water softener or annual descaling treatment can double your heater’s lifespan.
If you’re not comfortable handling valves or electrical breakers, that’s a good time to call in a pro.
